Some of the highlights of the tour

Hirauchi Sea Spa - The tidal hot spring can only be entered 2 hours before and after the low tide. It is a unisex hot spring and swim wear cannot be worn. Wearing a towel in the water is allowed – though your fellow bathers might not bring their towel! If the tide is too high then you can walk down to the hot spring and take a close look at the pools without having to get naked. If you fancy trying this unique experience, please let us know. We will do our best to time your visit with the low tides.

Ohko Waterfall - The most impressive of the waterfalls, selected as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls, this 88 meter high surge of water ranges from a good flow of water to jaw-droopingly powerful. You can get very close to its spray.

Seibu Rindo Forest path – It is the World Heritage zone along this beautiful, narrow, winding road cut into the steep mountainside and enter the world of the Yakushika (Yakushima's native deer) and Yakuzaru (the native Yakushima macaque). This route usually offers plenty of chances to watch these animals in their natural environment, though just like people they may not be out and about when the weather is bad. Depending on the time schedule then we can take a short walk into the forest to a popular deer location.

Nagata-Inaka-hama - The golden sandy beaches and a breeding site for the endangered loggerhead turtles. Take a walk along the beach while your guide tells you all about these amazing creatures and if you visit between spring and mid-summer then you can see signs of the adult turtles that lay their eggs on the beach or the baby turtles that hatch from August through September.

Senpiro Waterfall - This waterfall sits at the back of an immense 'V' shaped granite valley that seems to belittle the waterfall which is actually a combined height of around 80 meters (there are two falls).

A bento – a Japanese packed lunch will be prepared for you as most of the sites you visit are on the unpopulated side of the island, where there are few shops and restaurants.

Enjoy a dinner prepared with local fresh ingredient at the hotel!!

Optional tour: Sea-Turtle Viewing Night Tour (price from GBP50 per person) from mid-May to July would be amazing experience!

Day 3 Yakushima / Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine

Breakfast at Hotel.

The popular highlight of Yakushima Island!

Shiratani Unsuikyo 1 day hike with a local English-speaking guide
Distance: 8km
Time: 7-8 hours
Altitude: 600 ~1,070m

A guide will pick you up from the hotel by car.
This hike go through the 'genseirin (virgin forest)' which produces some of the best scenery. There are also some big trees along this route including Nidai Osugi (large cedar), Bugyo sugi (cedar) and the photogenic Sanbon-ashi sugi (3 legged cedar) and the best moss area. After ‘genseirin’ route, re-join the main route, the 'Moss Forest' which used to be known as the 'Princess Mononoke Forest' one of the Ghibli films inspired by the wonderful setting in the area. Beyond the Moss Forest is the climb towards Taiko Iwa (rock). It takes around 45 minutes to reach the top of Taiko Iwa and on a clear day it has to be one of the highlights of the day as the views over to the central mountains are great. Miyanoura-dake (Mt. Miyanoura-the highest mountain not only in Yakushima, but also in Kyushu area) stands before you and there are also good views of the Arakawa Valley and Tachu Dake (Mt. Tachu) over in the distance.

Returning back down you keep to the Kusugawa Trail (an old logging trail), passing a few more large cryptomeria trees including Nanahon sugi.

Heavy rain can force the Shiratani Unsuikyo forest to be closed due to some dangerous river crossings. In this event we would likely move the tour to ‘the Yakusugi Land’ area as the river crossings there are much safer. There are many water access points along this hike.

A bento – a Japanese packed lunch will be prepared for you.

Trekking/Hiking shoes and rain suits are strongly recommended and rental services with very reasonable price are available.
