Tanegashima, a long-thin shaped fairly flat land is one of the islands off southern coast of Kagoshima prefecture and offer diverse and expressive natural scenery such as beautiful sandy beaches, fascinating caves, and a very diverse flora and fauna.
It is also called "surfer's paradise" as fantastic waves can be seen much of the year, however none of the beaches are hardly crowded, so they could be your paradise, if you are looking for serenity.
The island is historically an important place as well, because the first "Hinawa-ju (Matchlock guns)" were brought here in 16th century.
One of the must-see spots is Tanegashima Space Centre, the home of Japan’s space program run by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) is located in the South end of the Island.
Another attractions are Star-filled skies and one of the preeminent sea turtle nesting areas where egg laying likely to be seen on and before / after full moon between May and July.

Day 1 Kagoshima – Tanegashima Island

Arrive at Kagoshima city by flight or train.

Make your own way to Kagoshima Jet Foil Terminal (approx. 20 min. by local bus from Kagoshima-chuo station/ 60 min. by shuttle bus from Kagoshima Airport)

Sail to Tanegashima Island (Nishinoomote port) by Jet Foil ‘Toppy’ (approx. sailing time: 100min.)

On arrival, pick up a rental car and explore the Tanegashima Island!
