Miyazaki Prefecture

Miyazaki is located on the south eastern coast of Kyushu, and the mythical home of the sun goddess Amaterasu. The climate is warm and balmy, so there are numerous palm trees to help with the stifling heat. The Miyazaki-jingu Shrine and Aoshima Shrine are both historical places that provide a solemn yet scenic view.

Takachiho

Takachiho

Takachiho is located in the north west of the Miyazaki region and the town borders between the Oita and Kumamoto regions.

Takachiho is associated with the myths and legends of the founding of the nation. There are a number of interesting and worthwhile sightseeing spots connected to the myths.

At the Takachiho Shrine in the evening, you can enjoy watching ‘Yokagura’, which has been handed down from generation to generation in this area.

Takachiho is known as a ‘Power Spot’ a place believed to give visitors spiritual energy, healing or a simply recharging the body and the best spots for a spiritual experience are Takachiho Gorge, the Amanoiwato Shrine and Amano yasu gawara.


Takachiho Gorge

Takachiho Gorge

One of the main attractions in Takachiho. It was created by the erosion of lava from Mt Aso. You can rent a boat to row along the gorge to be encompassed by its breath-taking natural scenery.

The Amanoiwato Shrine
was built near Amano yasu gawara, the cave where the sun goddess Amaterasu is said to have hid herself away.

Amano yasu gawara
Just a short walk from the Amanoiwato Shrine. It is said that 8 million Gods gathered here to find a way of luring the sun goddess Amaterasu from her hiding to bring back the sunlight.

Along the river, you will see piles after piles of stones, as it is believed that wishes come true when the stones are stacked in neat and orderly pile


Aoshima

Aoshima

Aoshima is a small island surrounded by a wave shaped rock formation known as 'Oni no sentakuita' (Ogre's Washboard). There is a Shinto shrine, Aoshima Jinja on the island.

The Nichinan coastline is the southernmost saw-toothed coastline and one of the best driving routes in Japan.


Udo Shrine

Udo Shrine

A Shinto shrine is situated within a cave in the cliff face, overlooking the sea. This shrine is dedicated to the father of Jimmu, Japan's mythical first emperor. You can buy ‘Undama’ (lucky stones) and try to toss them into a depression on the rock shaped like turtle. Men do this with the left hand and women it with the right hand. If one of the stones lands in the centre, it’s believed your wish will come true.
